Nyaks are important characters in the epic of Sinxay and are guardian figures seen in temples (wats) in both Laos and Thailand. They are also incorporated in an abstract way in Lao textiles as protective figures, scaring away any evil spirits. The photo above shows one of the many nyaks at Wat Phra Keo and in the photo below you can see the motif of a nyak wovn into a Tai Daeng (Red Tai) blanket from Sam Tai, Laos now known as a Phi Nyak, the Nyak Spirit.
